Why can't I log in or upload or edit or...?

What you CAN and CANNOT do on an FTP site is totally dependent on the rights or permissions that have been granted for your login ID. For example, most FTP sites allow the login ID of Anonymous, but the user Anonymous cannot upload files to the site.

If you have problems with an FTP site, here are some things to check:

  • Simply logging in as Anonymous will usually NOT let you create/delete directories or upload files. You usually have to have a special Login ID for these tasks.
  • When defining the FTP site and entering the Login ID and Password, these fields are case-sensitive. You MUST enter your Login ID and Password EXACTLY as the FTP site administrator defined them.
  • Often Login IDs have been assigned editing rights to one directory but only viewing rights to others. Check that the directory you are trying to work with is one for which you have been properly set up.
  • Your Login ID could be setup with permission for you to upload files, but not to create or delete directories. Check the specific rights with your FTP site administrator.
  • If your Login ID normally takes you to a default directory other than the root, be sure to enter the directory path in the Default Directory field.
